ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part focuses on the concentration of capital in mega-urban regions of the Philippines. It examines Kota Kinabalu and Malaysia which points to the private sector's dominance in funding infrastructure projects. The part discusses the new urban areas promoted in post-reform Vietnam are large-scale, corporate-invested and profit-driven developments. It also examines young men's search for jobs after Indonesia's decentralization that gives more autonomy to local governments in making urban development decisions. The part provides an analysis of urban development through a transportation planning perspective. It analyzes inequality is more extreme when urban development is geared towards achieving the city as a spectacle on Phnom Penh's Diamond Island. The part also presents a collection of perspectives from various disciplines in analyzing Southeast Asia's urbanization.
