ABSTRACT

The issue of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) has received considerable attention worldwide. Since 2011, the number of people worldwide newly infected with HIV and AIDS has decreased by 33 percent. Children have received attention mainly in relation to "mother to child transmission" and pediatric AIDS. Although many of the vulnerabilities that children face are poverty related, migration is a factor that many children and caregivers must face as a result of HIV and AIDS. The lasting and negative impact of vulnerability caused by HIV/AIDS has prompted a need for interventions to respond to this crisis. Concern over the growing number of orphans led to a consensus on the "Framework for the Protection, Care and Support of Orphans and Vulnerable Children Living in a World with HIV and AIDS." The National Action Plans for Orphans and Vulnerable Children have been widely adopted across sub-Saharan Africa within relevant ministries.
