ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of one of these institutions: Children of God Relief Institute, which consists of two facilities, Nyumbani Children's Home in Karen, Nairobi and Nyumbani Village in Kitui, Machakos County. According to the National Policy on Orphans and Vulnerable Children, the concept includes a child who has lost one or both parents—maternal orphan, parental orphan, double orphan—to Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. Nyumbani Home was founded to provide holistic care for HIV positive children, who are mostly orphans. The HIV epidemic in Kenya has evolved since the first case was diagnosed in 1984 and become one of the major causes of mortality. An analysis of the trend in funding shows that the government of Kenya spends about 50 percent of the total funding on HIV treatment and care, followed by prevention and health system coordination. As is the case in other parts of Africa, fostering in Kenya generally takes two forms: Formal and informal care.
