ABSTRACT
There has been a long history of concern with the ‘small’ firm, its ability to survive against large competitors, its role in sparking innovation and creating change, and latterly in being the prime source of new employment. However, there has also been an even more powerful lobby over the years extolling the virtues of the large firm as the engine room of economic progress and the natural exploiters of various scale economies.
