ABSTRACT
The Independent Labour Party was the first British socialist organisation which may be considered a mass party. There are a variety of analyses of the ILP's growth from its foundation in 1893 to the establishment of the Labour Representation Committee in 1900. But, curiously enough, historians as different as Edward Thompson and Henry Pelling have arrived at rather similar conclusions in seeking to explain the ILP's original appeal and chart its first decade of growth.
