ABSTRACT

Trauma can have a profound effect that shatters previously held assumptions about life. However, in recent years there has been growing recognition that trauma can also provide a stimulus for positive change. This chapter explores how creativity through art can help to reclaim life after trauma. After presenting contemporary theory regarding post-traumatic growth and resilience, observations of the role of art in recovery are offered by two veterans from personal experience, using their own words. This is followed by a discussion of their observations using a model of post-traumatic growth to examine the processes involved.
