Health Care Chaplaincy book
The study of health care chaplaincy is a relatively recent development. Although the work of chaplains has been associated with the care of the sick since medieval times (Swift 2014), it was only in recent years that their work has become a topic of research and professional education. How, when and where health care chaplaincy began to be studied is intimately connected to the chaplains’ sense of professional identify and occupational security. This chapter sets out the organisation, structure and form of chaplaincy care in the United Kingdom (UK), mindful of international links and comparisons. It will explore the key themes in the current practice of chaplaincy and analyse the challenges faced in both the provision of spiritual care and the ways in which it is studied.
