ABSTRACT

The fundamentals of ontology, epistemology and methodology matter in wisdom research for two important reasons. One is that researchers need to understand at a fundamental level the nature of practical wisdom (also called phrónêsis) if they are to sensibly discuss and create insights about its nature and understand how to ground those insights in organizations. The other is that organizational wisdom researchers might be advised to consider adopting integral, practical wisdom-based (phrónêtic) methodologies, rather than traditional epistemic methodologies in their own work. Central to this methodological project is integrating ontology, epistemology and axiology. Understanding how epistemology, ontology and axiology can be integrated has much to tell us about applying? phrónêtic methodology in research. More broadly, social science and humanities, henceforth social and organizational science research needs a revitalization to better and more effectively address our turbulent and struggling world in which wise practice is urgently needed. Integral, wisdom-based research methods can help to facilitate this revitalization. This chapter therefore is as much about the fundamentals of developing and grounding social practice-based theories of organizational wisdom as it is about how management and leadership research can matter in the twenty-first century.
