ABSTRACT

What needs to be conserved are the opportunities of future generations to lead worthwhile lives. The fact of sustainability (in both production and consumption) implies that what we are obligated to leave behind is a generalized capacity to create well-being, not any particular thing or any particular resource. Since we do not know what the tastes and preferences of future generations will be, and what they will do, we can talk of sustainability only in terms of conserving a capacity to produce well-being.
