ABSTRACT

A group of stakeholders—representatives from industry, government, and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs)—sits in a room packed with tables, listening intently to presentations about a pressing social and health issue: growing rates of obesity. While everyone in the room has been invited to discuss potential solutions and policy recommendations related to obesity, especially childhood obesity, “discussion” is not a word that captures the activity taking place. Instead, groups are drawing battle lines between themselves and others, and they are clearly lobbying for position and the right to speak on behalf of the public.
