ABSTRACT

For more than two decades, the fight against AIDS has used powerful prevention messages throughout the media for the promotion of safe sex practices. Western nations, including Canada and the US, are today confronted by a fresh outbreak of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, despite the efforts of health care professionals and organisations engaged in campaigns of prevention. Although these campaigns constitute critical elements in the struggle against HIV/STIs, we believe that these campaigns are also capable of engendering iatrogenic effects.
