ABSTRACT

Aviation is a worldwide industry that has a significant impact on global and national economies. The industry employs substantial numbers of people and has input into the transportation of people and goods both internationally and domestically. In addition to the visible aspects of aviation such as airports and aircraft, the industry is a major player in areas including manufacturing, supply chains, logistics, hospitality and tourism. The flying component of the aviation industry can be broken down into two domains: civil and military. Military aviation has its own subcategories and these are not addressed here in detail. Civil aviation refers to all other aviation activities. It includes commercial aviation, that is, aircraft operated for profit. These are predominately airlines, but can include operations that do not include fare-paying passengers. General aviation encompasses all other aviation operations (Kumar, DeRemer and Marshall, 2004).
