ABSTRACT

The rapid advancements in computer systems and technology in general have had a profound effect on aviation. Voller and Agel-Porte (2002) briefly describe Moore’s law, which predicts that the capabilities of digital electronic devices will double every 18 months. The pace of the introduction of advanced aviation technology has been gaining momentum since the late 1990s to early 2000s. Technology that was developed in the military and incorporated in large commercial jets advanced to the point of significant cost reduction to allow the various technologies to be incorporated into light aircraft. As with many industries, new technology has impacted on the attitudes, skills and proficiencies of pilots in the aviation industry. However, advanced technology such as the glass cockpit has been embraced by some pilots more than others.
