ABSTRACT

Reflection, reflecting and reflective practice have meanings which have developed quite specifically in relation to educational practice – as illustrated particularly in 'experiential learning' and 'Action Learning', both traditions with a strong influence within management education and development. In this chapter I will first sketch out a definition of 'reflection', then summarize some of the ideas which have influenced the theory and practice of reflection in action-based learning, before describing and illustrating a more recent development in thinking of 'critical' reflection, and its role in action learning in particular.
