ABSTRACT

In Taiwan, the central government comprises five branches: the Legislative Yuan, the Executive Yuan, the Judicial Yuan, the Examination Yuan and the Control Yuan. The Legislative Yuan is the supreme legislative authority, the Executive Yuan is the executive branch of the government, the Judicial Yuan is the highest judicial organ, 1 the Examination Yuan is the highest organ presiding over matters relating to examination, employment, registration, and so on, and the Control Yuan is the highest organ exercising powers over consent, impeachment, censure and auditing. The idea of the first three branches is equivalent to the doctrine of the separation of powers, i.e., the legislative, executive and judicial powers, in the Western context.
