ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an account of the relationship between emotion, reason, law and ultimately legal education as complementary rather than antagonistic. We do not deny the potential for irrationality and destructive behaviour in our emotional lives. However, the familiar image of a dramatic clash between cognitive thought and feeling obscures the more normal, and in fact necessary, co-operation of reason and emotion in the human animal. It is our view that the co-operation of reason and emotion should be acknowledged as an intrinsic element of module design in legal education.
