This chapter explores the updates, new challenges and prospects in the teaching of African Religion. It examines the teaching of African Religion in selected public and private universities. In 1999, the African Association of the Study of Religions (AASR) held a conference in Nairobi where the author presented a paper entitled "Teaching African Religion in Tertiary Institutions in East Africa'. In East Africa, several tertiary institutions offer courses on African Religion. The first university to be established in East Africa was the University of East Africa at Makerere Hill in Uganda. The non-teaching department of creative art also contributes to propagating African Religion through its performance of African ritual dances. In 1987 the School of Social, Cultural and Development Studies, now the School of Arts and Social Sciences, was established. The late Prof. P. Ade Dopamu, while serving as a visiting scholar from Ilorin University, Nigeria, devoted a great deal of attention to Doctor of Philosophy degree program.
