ABSTRACT

This chapter presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book identifies an array of challenges that will impede the formulation of successful innovative health policies. Health provides a lens into a particular challenge for orthodox concepts of state sovereignty. The book concentrates on the reasons why traditional medicine must be integrated into health systems in the African region, and then describes the formats in which systems of integration have taken place. The establishment of rules governing traditional medicine provides a framework for developing the practice while ensuring safety measures are respected. Anita Davis provides an overview of international migration patterns and the important relationship between migrants' legal status, and access to healthcare services. The book emphasizes the necessity for policy makers to develop policy coherence in interdependent sectors and create integrated initiatives at different levels of governance.
