ABSTRACT
The African Union Peace and Security Architecture is designed to promote conflict prevention, peacemaking, peacekeeping and post-conflict peacebuilding. The Panel of the Wise has been established as part of the peacemaking component. Specifically, the Panel is an integral aspect of the African Union’s (AU) dedicated preventive diplomacy framework given its mandate to anticipate potential crisis situations and intervene in a timely fashion to prevent the escalation of a dispute or resolve existing tensions to reduce the likelihood of a return to violence.
