ABSTRACT
It was in 1991 that the villagers of Ciubara, a small community in the north of Moldova, decided to restore a Soviet monument dedicated to the Second World War. Rather surprisingly for present-day observers, the locals added a cross on the top of the monument, but preserved the red star – the characteristic Soviet symbol. After being restored, the monument was inaugurated during hram – a major religious holiday for rural communities, which celebrates the patron saint of a church.
