ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book examines a number of unique strategies for inter alia filling the gap in labour markets resulting from a combination of ageing populations and low fertility rates. It briefly examines the use of migrant labour in OECD countries as an alternative to help fill the gap in the labour market as a result of older workers exiting the labour market and not being replaced by younger workers. The use of IT training in Malaysia to render older people more productive and consequently more employable, thus enabling an extension of their working lives. The book examines the role of government, the public and the private sector in implementing the core values of accountability, sustainability and social responsibility in order to deal with the socio-economic challenges posed by an ageing population.
