ABSTRACT

The Azores archipelago is one of Europe’s remotest regions, located in the North Atlantic about 1,800 km from the Portuguese mainland and 4,500 km from North America at longitude 24°46’/31°16’ and latitude 39°43’/36°55’. Year-round direct flights link the islands with Lisbon (2 hrs 15 mins), London (3 hrs 30 mins), Frankfurt (4 hrs 30 mins), Stockholm (5 hrs 30 mins), Boston (5 hrs 30 mins) and Toronto (6 hrs). The nine islands that comprise the archipelago have a total land area of 2,333 km2, with Corvo the smallest at 17 km2 and 445 inhabitants and São Miguel the largest at 747 km2 and 130,800 inhabitants. Table 3.1 lists the population size and land area of each of the islands. The distances between the islands vary from just 6 km to 600 km.
