ABSTRACT

Baggage is almost everything and anything a passenger brings on their flight. The passenger is more aware of the commercial restrictions of the airline such as the baggage allowance: how many bags, what weight is allowed as hold baggage, what the cabin baggage allowance is, and what the cost of excess baggage such as sports equipment. In the baggage handling process, it is common to distinguish between different types of baggage. These different types or categories are as follows: normal baggage, hold baggage, hand baggage, carry-on/cabin bags, odd size, out of gauge (OOG), pets, wheelchairs, sports goods, dangerous goods and baggage taken/collected at the gate. OOG baggage is normal baggage which either exceeds or falls outside the physical dimensions permitted for automated baggage handling. Pets can travel in the cabin or in the hold, but only pets which are checked in to travel in the hold of the aircraft are part of the baggage handling domain.
