ABSTRACT

Globalization is multi-faceted phenomenon comprised of economic, political and cultural dimensions. In a like manner, transnational terrorism is a complex issue encompassing all the dimensions of globalization, plus religion. Given that both globalization and terrorism have some of the same dimensions it is only logical that some linkage should exist between the two. In this chapter we explore the relationship between globalization and terrorism. This chapter examines globalization and how it can affect terrorism in the political, economic and cultural realms. Furthermore, this chapter evaluates those factors that make some parts of the world inviting for terrorist groups to base their operations. Finally, an analysis of recent terrorist events, based upon severity, geographic region and target, highlights not only the methods and effectiveness of terror attacks but illuminates those aspects of globalization that either promote or retard the growth of terrorism on a global scale.
