ABSTRACT
On 22 January 1901, Queen Victoria died and was succeeded to the throne by her son, King Edward VII. Edward reigned until his death on 6 May 1910 and just as we know Victoria's time on the throne as the Victorian age, so we know Edward's as the Edwardian period. By the time The Good Soldier appeared in 1915, Ford had already published more than forty books, eighteen of which were novels. Of these, only The Shifting of the Fire appeared before Edward VII became king and so, in one sense at least, almost all of Ford's fiction before The Good Soldier was Edwardian. In 1924, Virginia Woolf's essay Mr. Bennett and Mrs. Brown appeared. Along with the earlier Modern Fiction', this essay is now a standard entry in anthologies of modernist writings, of twentieth-century literary criticism, and on the theory of the novel.
