ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an argument for anarchy in the true sense of the term; that is, a society without government, not a society without governance. Anarchy refers to a society without a central political authority. The identification of anarchy with disorder is not a trivial matter. The debate between anarchists and the supporters of classical liberal, night watchman state concerns the core functions of government. The fact that there is no non-governmental way to raise sufficient capital to realise the conception of national defense proves nothing about the viability of anarchy, and, in fact, serves as one more argument in favor of markets. The defenders of government argue that certain goods or services that are essential to human life in society can be supplied only by a government. On the other hand, to the extent that the gradual transition from government to anarchy is successful, the need for national defense continually lessens.
