ABSTRACT

Although there is no overall consensus on the meaning of the terms ‘third sector’ and ‘civil society’, most definitions of both include an element of volunteering as an important characteristic (e.g. Salamon and Anheier, 1997; Scholte, 2002; Kendall, 2009). As a contribution to the broader exploration of the effects of the crisis on the third sector and civil society in Greece, this chapter will therefore examine how volunteering has been affected by the turmoil of the past few years. 1
