ABSTRACT

A key challenge of any law library and information service is enabling users to keep up to date with the shifting landscape of rules and regulations and, at the same time, to be commercially aware. ‘Current awareness’ is the term that is used to describe services that meet this information need and it is often the law library that is responsible for its provision. The service can take many forms, but the three models commonly employed by information professionals, and often in combination, are:

• manually filtering, selecting and publishing relevant information in a specific format for their users;

• using their searching skills to automate alerts through various services, which are accessible by users in a specific format; or

• adopting a ‘self-service’ approach by providing users with the relevant links and instructions for setting up the services.
