ABSTRACT
There continued to be a widespread belief that authors are the best people to index their own works. In a wide-ranging article which emphasized the importance of indexes and deplored the number of academic works that appeared without them David Henige maintained that authors know the exact contexts, nuances and connections of their work better than any professional indexer could. Griffith-Jones looked at aspects of the relationship between author and indexer. The Wheatley Medal had been set up by the Library Association in 1961, to be awarded annually for an outstanding index published in the United Kingdom. The journal of the Cambrian Archaeological Association, Archaeologia Cambrensis, first appeared in 1846 and had had several cumulative indexes over the years. James Hartley pursued his interest in structured abstracts, first proposing that they should be required for all technical articles, and following this up with a further survey.
