ABSTRACT

Academic libraries including business libraries have responded to the questioning of the uses of library space in a number of ways. This chapter discusses several of the trends that have impacted on academic business libraries and which continue to do so into the near future. In the future of the Information or Learning Commons role, the library has the potential to evolve from its role as service provider to that of facilitator. The chapter considers the academic business library of the future need to assess the library as place in terms of whether the library is perceived as supporting the business schools mission. It needs to measure the use of our library space using institutional metrics rather than library metrics. Measuring the value of business libraries in these terms is not commonly done, and one of the challenges that academic business libraries face in the future is to determine how to measure this value.
