ABSTRACT

Business transformation typically takes the shape of highly complex, multifaceted projects that require coordination of interrelated domains such as business and IT. Any efforts toward transformation must take into account the particular organizations capabilities, resources, and competencies not just to best effect change, but to ensure that core capabilities and advantages are not undercut by the change itself. A transformational Chief information officer (CIO) helps the management team to develop the vision, gathers support and buy-in from stakeholders, and successfully leads the organization through the transformation. Any CIO interested in transformation needs a vision, a view of the future that can excite and convert potential followers. The CIO must manage the change and achieve the desired results. The transformational CIO must be a visible leader one who can motivate and rally employees at all points in the process. A holistic approach to business transformation management includes four phases: envision, engage, transform, and optimize. Leadership is crucial to successful transformational change.
