ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book gives a very practical overview of business wargaming and how it can be applied. It discusses the history of military wargaming, starting with the earliest applications and highlighting the development of military wargaming during the Prussian era and subsequently, after World War II, in the United States (US) military. The book explains the mechanics of wargaming, referring here to the application of business wargaming for strategy testing. It emphasizes the role of business wargaming for strategy formulation. The book describes the process of testing strategies through business wargames, including case examples from the private sector as well as a brief note on an application in the military field. It discusses a number of issues around the design and execution of a business wargame. The book describes two areas promising for applying business wargaming methodology: strategic early warning systems and corporate reputation.
