ABSTRACT

Before we take a closer look at some tools for strategic planning, this chapter investigates in more detail what we mean when we talk about strategy. There is no commonly accepted definition for the terms strategy, strategic leadership or strategic planning. An interesting view on strategy, formulated by two retired military leaders, Lieutenant General Josef Feldmann and Colonel of the Swiss Army, describes strategy as a bridge between where an organization stands today and where it wants to be tomorrow. The history of military wargaming illustrates how wargaming was used by military planners throughout the centuries as a tool to cope with increasingly complex and dangerous environments and how the tool can be effectively applied in order to reduce the risks associated with strategic miscalculations. Through strategy we develop a game plan, watch over its execution and lead the actions of our organization.
