ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the energy cooperation between Denmark and South Africa, China, and the other emerging economic powers. It conducts an empirical analysis departing from the theoretical concept of the multi-level energy governance, inquiring into the way of the international transactions within the realm of energy interplay with the traditional national protectionist policies pursued by governments in this strategic domain. The research conducted here revealed important dynamics in Denmark's choice of partners, the content of its cooperation with China and South Africa, and the importance of the EU in shaping policies at the national level. Being a member of the EU, Danish energy strategy has a fundamental component that is developed within the Union. Having green energy technology as an increasingly important share of its economy, Denmark also has economic incentives to pursue ambitious environmental policies with positive spill-over effects at the EU level.
