ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the leading role of the Germany in the multilateral initiatives for the renewable energy and the energy efficiency. Germany's bilateral relations with Emerging Powers have been directed to promote multilateral energy governance, a more sustainable energy system, and emission reduction. Energy external policy is determined to a large extent by the national energy mix, because Germany has to deal with and face high import dependencies. Energy has geopolitical and economic dimensions and can also be seen as a vehicle for talking about collective security approaches. It is constructive, therefore, if energy partnerships are accompanied by a strategic energy dialogue and ministerial consultations, which can serve as components for better global energy governance. Energy policy is primarily conducted through the lens of the power sector, despite the country's high import dependency on oil, gas, and hard coal. Renewable energies and energy efficiency technologies have become important economic branches in Germany, backed by an industrial and technological imperative.
