ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the role and impact of digital humanities in the age of the Internet. It examines the influence which a digital humanity has had so far and discusses potential developments. The chapter talks about collaboration, which in digital humanities is usually considered in terms of specific joint projects within academia, where the benefits of working together are reasonably well understood and where each party can identify outcomes that satisfy the requirements of their particular discipline. The Research Excellence Framework, which is the new system for assessing the quality of research in UK Higher Education Institutions, is an added impetus for reaching out beyond the academic community. Text Encoding Initiative(TEI) researchers were actively involved in the development and promotion of XML in its early days, but within the community of users who already understood the need for XML. Teaching also has a big role to play in the future of humanities computing and in developing new collaborations beyond academia.
