ABSTRACT

This chapter wishes to unravel the role and mission of Basilian monk's regulars of eastern Christianity in the Transylvanian Greek-Catholic diocese of Fgra during the eighteenth century. Basilian monks made their appearance on the scene in the context of Transylvania's recent affiliation to the Habsburg monarchy and the pressures of the late Catholic Reformation, which led to the union of the Eastern Church of Transylvania with the Catholic Church of Rome resulting in the Greek-Catholic or Uniate Church. It explores the role played by Basilian monks in constructing the identity of the Uniate Church as they sought to accommodate both the traditions of the Eastern Church and the influence of the Roman Catholic environments with which they came into contact. It focuses on the role designed for the Basilian monks by both political and ecclesiastical Catholic and Uniate authorities.
