ABSTRACT

This sentence, which occurs in one of the many tributes paid to Sir Henry Yule after his death, sums up the three strands in Yule’s work which form the subject of this brief sketch. 2 The aim is to show the educational background, professional training and practical experience which lay behind the achievements of a man who is remembered today as the editor and translator of three important works for the Hakluyt Society, together with a scholarly edition of The Book of Ser Marco Polo, and as the compiler of Hobson-Jobson, the only one of Yule’s books which is still in print, a century after the date when it was first published.
