ABSTRACT

This chapter examines Western Australia's wellness tourism industry in the context of the broader debates on the development, management and success of wellness tourism destinations. It draws on the findings of a multidisciplinary body of new research, utilizing a novel framework to assess wellness tourism destination competitiveness. The chapter makes a study of the wellness tourism sector in the Margaret River Wine Region of Western Australia by assessing the relevance of several categories of core resources and competencies derived from this framework, which are considered to be crucial for its competitiveness. It focuses on literature review predominantly, which concentrates on resources which constitute. The chapter explores the case study area selected to apply wellness tourism destination competitiveness model. To conclude, as assessed in the chapter using Voigt and Pforr's framework of wellness tourism destination competitiveness, the Margaret River Wine Region features many of the attributes identified in this model.
