ABSTRACT

Peri-urbanization around Australian cities is not a uniform process. The characteristics of place, as well as of demography, are considered to offer explanations for choice and processes of change. Life-cycle issues, relative income, housing affordability and accessibility to labour markets are amongst these explanations. Understanding this differentiated process is important for considering the characteristics of growth, infrastructure provision and environmental pressures; each forming critical parts of the conflicts and planning dilemmas evident in peri-urban regions.
