ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the process of practising Collaborative Planning in an Egyptian context, such that the history and the cultural values of that context are recognised. It underlines the potential in a new context – in this instance, the case study of zifta City – to provide different practical and theoretical interpretations of Collaborative Planning ideas. A proactive approach was pursued, to set Collaborative Planning in dialogue with the people 'performing' social interaction in an Egyptian urban reality. A learning-oriented planning process was devised that reflected the deliverables the author needed to produce during the project for each of her assigned roles in the practice of Collaborative Planning in Zifta. Applying the practice of Collaborative Planning at multiple levels, gives the advantage of building institutional planning capacity as it addresses changes in both formal and informal relationships. Knowledge transferred to zifta via the application of the Collaborative Planning by the action researcher.
