ABSTRACT

The project of this book came as a surprise to me. I have always thought that my contribution as a planning scholar had to be judged by the critical evaluation of readers, but I had not imagined that anyone would attempt the interpretive task of making sense of the different things I have thought about, researched and written over the years. I have to thank Jean Hillier for being intrigued enough to initiate this project and determined enough to track down the various strands of work I have engaged in, and also for the many intense, and sometimes critical, discussions we have had over the years. There are terms I came to use in the 2000s which I would not have introduced into my work without these discussions. My thanks also to Jonathan Metzger for his grasp of my work and for our various, mostly e-discussions, and to all the authors of this volume, for their critical appreciation of what I have tried to do as a planning scholar.
