ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how community economic development (CED) law and lawyering is practised in Ireland by examining the case of Ballymun Community Law Centre (BCLC) as an example of the interaction between public interest law and regeneration. It presents an overview of public interest law and CED in the US with a focus on disinvestment. The chapter provides a background as to the regeneration process in Ireland, including the influences of sustainable development policies in regeneration. The tackling of urban poverty and the creation of a better urban economy in Ireland has meant that the government has played much more of a role in funding the development of social housing regeneration schemes. Regeneration efforts in Ireland and the involvement of public interest law are best exemplified by the regeneration efforts of Ballymun. Funding for infrastructure development and regeneration has changed the landscape for a number of cities and towns in Ireland.
