ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the potential for 'transforming' the dominant gender order through women's entrepreneurship in a changing forestry sector. it discusses the preconditions for women to take their place and act as a transforming force, which in the terminology of Coutinho-Sledge would facilitate movement towards a 'feminized forestry'. In the governmental report from 2004, the low representation of women in public and corporate organizations and women's limited access to networks in the forestry sector was seen as an obstacle to the achievement of gender equality within the forestry sector. The first was a politically driven process based on a tradition of a general interest and involvement in gender equality issues, as reflected in the governmental investigation of gender equality in the agriculture and forestry sectors. The chapter describes the understanding of the preconditions for and movement towards enhanced gender equality in Swedish forestry.
