ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book reviews the evidence and discussions concerning future-oriented coping, including the mixed evidence for relationships between coping and personality constructs. It examines the role of political behaviour in the workplace, the extent to which this reflects aspects of personality and its significance for individual psychological well-being. The book explores the role of personality in the frame of contemporary work stress research, and specifically how personality may affect work stress and its consequences for health. It presents new data from a longitudinal cohort study of workers in the United States. The book also explores the relationship between two focal social stressors and psychological strains and also examines how self-efficacy and active coping might protect employees from negative effects of social stressors. It focuses on the study of positive factors that can empower youth to deal with financial strain in times of economic recession.
