ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concept discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book analyses the electric power, oil, pulp and paper, cement and steel industries. It focuses on the analysis of corporate climate strategies, responses to the European Union (EU) Emissions Trading System (ETS) and other company-internal and wider external factors. The book deals with segment of the energy industries: oil companies. These companies are affected directly by the EU ETS because of their emissions from production and processing activities, and more strategically by carbon pricing that may spread beyond Europe. It focuses on the pulp and paper industry, with the Swedish company Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolag (SCA) and the Norwegian Norske Skog selected for in-depth analysis. The book studies the cement industry, and includes a focus on the Swiss company Holcim and the German Heidelberg Cement. It explores the German company Thyssenkrupp and the Swedish company SSAB as agents of the steel industry.
