ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the policy instruments of the World Health Organization (WHO) in the area of workers’ health. It explains the WHO global approach to developing, implementing and evaluating healthy workplace programmes which address the protection and promotion of workers’ health in an integrated manner, and explains its rationale for such programmes. Psychosocial workplace hazards and work-related stress are set on an equal footing with the physical working environment in the WHO approach, which also covers the personal health resources and the interface with the community in which the company is active to ensure the application of business social responsibility. The chapter underlines the importance of psychosocial hazards with respect to a comprehensive policy framework, and explains why it has such a high relevance. Lastly, some good practice examples are outlined that comply with the principles of the WHO healthy workplace approach.
