ABSTRACT

In the autumn of 2009, the Greenlandic architect office tegnestuen tnt nuuk contacted us, Dahl & Uhre Architects, in the Norwegian Arctic city of Tromsø. This was the beginning of two years of north-to-north cooperation and dialogue-based co-design. In this chapter we share experiences from the making of the project Nunarsuup Qeqqani Nuup Qeccani/In the Middle of the World in the Middle of Nuuk. 1 Through evidence drawn from two comparable citizen participatory processes in Tromsø, we present ways to think creatively about city dialogues. We will show and discuss examples of how broad and inclusive dialogues at the city level combined with visual representations of the ideas that are conceived in such dialogues can open up opportunities to address a broad spectrum of questions related to planning under rapidly changing conditions.
