ABSTRACT

This chapter contributes to the holistic approach to intermediation taken in this collection by exploring how people and places are connected into the creative economy at a European level. Its concerns are framed around Cross Innovation, a project supported by EU funds and which promotes policies, generates research and initiates practical measures seeking productive interactions, or ‘spill-overs’, between the creative industries and other sectors (See: https://cross-innovation.eu" xmlns:xlink="https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">cross-innovation.eu). The project is founded on a partnership consisting of 11 metropolitan centres across Europe: Birmingham, Amsterdam, Rome, Berlin, Tallinn, Warsaw, Vilnius, Stockholm, Linz, Lisbon, and Pilsen. As we outline below, Cross Innovation is therefore representative of a range of initiatives that prompt questions regarding the role of culture and creative industries as part of the ‘European project’.
