ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the factors that could predispose individuals to favor some rationalizations over others. It also explains the different rationalization techniques described in previous literature, develop a typology of these techniques based on common underlying motives, and describe the dimensions of cultural values based on a well-established framework. The chapter examines the underlying assumptions of each rationalization strategy and offer predictions regarding cultural differences in preferring one strategy over the other. It also explores the effects of national culture in determining which rationalization type an individual or group will choose to adopt. Egalitarianism means that people view and treat others as moral equal who share the same basic interests. The chapter then elaborates more on key aspects of cultural value systems. Then, the final section explores relationships between rationalization strategies and cultural values. The chapter also explores the effects of national culture in determining which rationalization type an individual or group will choose to adopt.
